Crash Crash Crash - Having Fun!!!!

Hello all Vista Guru's

I now have 5 PC's running all versions of Windows Vista (Basic, Prem,
Ultimate). They are all working and all updated with the latest upgrades.
Now for the fun, I have roughly 24 hours of work and time spent installing
these products on both clean installs and upgrading from Windows XP.

My views are that Windows Vista is the most unstable system I have worked
with and you can crash the OS with just adding drivers, changing drivers and
or adding and removing software components. This is so wild that I have not
seen such an unstable OS like this before. I suggest that you truly install
with a clean install and no third party software involved. Be careful with
Roxio, Security Software, Printer Drivers, Adobe, and others as they will
bring down your system and blank out your screens. You will have a lot of
fun trying to recover.

Have fun as I now after so much work have my systems all running and up but
I would be very careful adding third party software.

Next time ensure all your software is 100% compatible before upgrading.
Uninstall, not just disable everything that gives even the slightest hint of
incompatibility.
A MUST for uninstall:
All antivirus and other software that monitors the safety or security of the
computer whether they are compatible with Vista or not.

Vista is stable on my computers, but then I made sure to perform a clean
Install and try to install appropriate updates.

I have reinstalled several times now. Vista is very finicky, even with
correct drivers. I have installed successfully and had to make several
attempts untill I succeed

Well congratulations. Vista is more than finicky, its flat out dumb in
several areas. Imagine, it took Microsoft FIVE YEARS to get it to this
point. I wonder what the early BETA releases looked like if the
released version is this shakey.

Wow... I just installed Ultimate x32 (I opted to upgrade my XP
installation) and it took about 1 hour and I had to do nothing except watch
the status bars. I then turned around and did a clean install of Ultimate
64 to my secondary boot partition, and that took about 45 minutes and,
again, I had to do nothing more than watch it install.

I will say, though, that I had to spend an extra 15 minutes or so on the
XP-upgraded partition after install to remove four or five drivers that the
upgrade program *warned me about* prior to install but which warnings I
ignored and installed over anyway. That was my fault as had I heeded the
upgrade program's advice and uninstalled these drivers/programs prior to the
upgrade commencing I'd only have had to install the appropriate Vista
drivers for my devices--which I had already downloaded prior to moving over
to Vista.

Based on your account I can imagine that you got umpteen dozens of
program/driver warnings during your Vista installations which, like me, you
chose to ignore and therefore reaped the consequences. Yes, third-party
software/drivers not written to run under Vista might just give people some
problems under Vista--what a surprise... The thing about Windows
generally that I've noticed for a long time is that often people expect that
an "intelligent" install program can overcome a thoughtless customer who has
decided in his infinite wisdom that the Vista install program is supposed to
do all of his thinking for him, and take all of the responsibility for
managing his system(s) away from him. Surprise! Windows often expects the
operator to be at least as intelligent as the Windows install program. I
realize that this is something that sticks in the craw of some people who
figure it is the business of Windows to be smart while they remain dumb, but
unfortunately that's not the way computers work. I don't mean to appear
uncharitable, but there it is. When in doubt, read and heed the
instructions, right?
