Crash on Sign-In

Today my old Messenger 9 beta stopped working with the message I should
upgrade to version 14 beta.
But this version does not work on my 64-bit Vista Ultimate machine.
Just great - I can't use the old version, I can't use the new version...
What should I do? Downgrade to version 8.5? Oh no...

Here the details of the error with version 14:

Messenger stopps working during the sign-in progress.
It just crashes with the usual windows dialog.
No error codes or anything.

So I tried debugging it with Visual Studio.

The error is an "unhandled exception at 0x5950f4bb in msnmsgr.exe:
0xC0000005: Access violation while writing on position 0x963cc03c."

Adress 5950F4BB is: "lock xadd dword ptr [eax],ecx"

If I skip that adress, Messenger displays an error message with the text
"Sign-In to WLM Beta not possible. The e-mail adress doesn't exist or the
service is not available." with error code 80070057.
(But I don't think that can be taken seriously because no Live-ID is
working)

An interesting thing is that the connection troubleshooter crashes as well.

Notice that this is the German version of WLM 14 Beta and these error lines
are just translations.

I hope this will be fixed or this stupid block for version 9 will go away.

try uninstalling and re-installing.

if that doesn't help, go ahead and post our debug information. Thanks!

Nick H.
windows live Messenger test team.

If on Vista

In the search bar in the start menu type 'problem'
Select 'Problem Reports and Solutions'
Click on View Problem History
Sort by Date.
In the Windows Live Messenger group select the most recent one.
If it does not say report sent, right click and choose "Check for
solutions". This will send a report and change the status to report sent.
Then double click the event, copy any information that you see there and
send it to us. Information that we are looking for are:
Problem signature
Problem Event Name:
Application Name:
Application Version:
Application Timestamp:
Fault Module Name:
Fault Module Version:
Fault Module Timestamp:
Exception Code:
Exception Offset:
OS Version:
Locale ID:
Additional Information 1:
Additional Information 2:
Additional Information 3:
Additional Information 4:

Extra information about the problem
Bucket ID:

If the above steps do not work, then follow the instructions for XP. It
should work for Vista too
If you are on XP

Click Start
Click Run
Type eventvwr.msc
You might see a large list of events
Go to View -> Filter
In Event Types check only Error. Uncheck everything else.
In Event Source select Windows Live Messenger.
Click OK.
You event view should now only have Windows Live Messenger errors.
Sort by Date
Open the most recent event by double clicking on it.
Note down the following:
Event ID
Copy and paste any description text. Select the text, Press Ctrl+C, Open
Notepad or Email client, Press Ctrl+V

Why hasn't Microsoft fixed this bug-I have read complaints about this dating
from over 1 year ago and multiple discussion groups. Please post a patch for
people-a simply solution. Thanks. ps this is not helping me defend the
switch to Vista or from Vista to Mac!

I had the same problem, but there is a solution and it is simple.

When I tried to log in with the new Live messenger 9.0 beta, I get the
error 80070057 and could not connect.

After searching the internet, could not find a solution, so I looked at
the system logfiles and found a few errors.

event id: 215

gestopt, omdat deze door de client is gestopt of omdat de verbinding met de
client is mislukt.

and event id: 458

Settings te maken is mislukt. Systeemfout 5 (0×00000005): Toegang geweigerd.
.. Tijdens het verwijderen van het bestand treedt fout -1032 (0xfffffbf8) op.

I opened the path in Explorer
C:\Documents and Settings\%Username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts
And deleted allmost all the maps but not the % map.
Then I restarted the Live messenger 9.0 beta and it worked again.

I have the same problem but also on older versions. The same installtion can close one day and work perfect the next day, no changes or re-installations....
I have now gone back to version 8.5 and basically all released versions after this one (including 8.5)are behaving in the same way.

This solution did help me as well, even if it comes back every now and then. But I also learned that deleting the file config.xml under C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\Brands\sv-SE fix the issue.
Looks almost like the advertising is causing this.... http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=461247
