Crash when using Windows update to go from WinXP SP1 to SP2

When going from WinXP SP1 to SP2 with Windows Update (English version), my
system hang completely on reboot, with symptoms identical to this KB article.

The KB suggested fix did although not work, so I ended up with a complete
reinstall. The only "non-standard" issue with this computer is dual CPU
(PIII, Dell Precision 210). Any known issues with such configurations?
Upgrading to SP2 from a clean XP install worked fine.
