Crashes when watching movie and very slow

I have just purchased two HP media center desktops with AMD dualcore chips
and plenty of power, supposedly. It came preloaded with Vista Home. The
first thing I noticed was how intrusive Vista is. Every time I click my
mouse it asks me if I really want to do this or that. I get it from
Defender and from Norton. The major problem other than the constant
intrusions that slow me down is that when I try to watch a movie especially a
foreign movie the picture is jerky or the computer crashes. Just locks up
and I have to shut it down. I have tried the help desks and chats with
friendly folks from wherever and they seem to be reading the help files from
the program. I can do that.
It seems that Vista is a resource hog? Am I right?
Is Defender duplicating what Norton is doing and I can do without one or the
other?
I am told to remove programs from startup and sometimes it lets me and other
times not? why? And by the way which ones? I'm a idiot OK.
I know this is long winded but I am ready to return $2,800 worth of
machinery and go back to my Pentium 3 with ME loaded on it. No viruses, fast
loading and simple. Don't worry I use XP at work and on a laptop.

I have already done that. I was sent a set of instructions for what I was
already doing except that when I followed them I lost the ability to hear the
soundtrack and plenty of other functionality. Part of the issue is that I am
told to eliminate start ups I don't need. Which ones would these be and if
so why are they there in the first place. I also notice that Vista seems to
have lots of cosmetic changes that eat up space and processing power so it
looks different but only serve to make the program have a steeper learning
curve. 2007 Office is the same. Lots of changes for no real reason that I
can fathom.

If you're getting a computer crash, you should be able to send a crash
report....

What information about this crash do you find in the Problem Reports and
Solutions Center? I'm specifically interested in the fault bucket bucket
data, which this-
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
can help you look up if you don't know how. =)

What's Vista's fault bucket number when it screws up?
