I have also a problem. My Windows XP professional is unuseable after
yesterday's update. The svchost.exe crashes and locks the computer (although
the mouse still moves).

You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
When you examine the %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you may see an
entry for one of the following errors:. 0x80096001
.. 0x80096005 . 0x80096010 . 0x800B0001 . 0x800B0003 . 0x800B0004 .
0x800B0109 . 0x8007f0da

0x800B0109 = CERT_E_UNTRUSTEDROOT
A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is
not trusted by the trust provider

Also see:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...orootupdt.mspx
Automatic updating of trusted root authorities

To turn on automatic updating of trusted root authority certificates
1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs
2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Select the Update Root Certificates check box.
4. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Note
To open Add/Remove Windows Components, click Start, click Control Panel,
click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
