Hallo there and thx in advance for your support:
Let me depict what I want to do:
I do have 2 W2k3 Sp2 servers and the one that is the exchange server is also
the PDC, DHCP server and DNS. Now taht I have the luxury of having a 3rd
server, I want to make this the one with PDC, DHCP, and DNS, while unloading
the exchange from all these additional roles. However I will need to go to
thee <NEW> server when I need to create a new user and the machine itself
will be able to create also this user's mailbox and all other settings...
Bear in mind taht my exhange server was the FIRST server on the domain, back
to 5 years ago, but requirements change...
Is this possible/feasible?

Hello isolabella,

Is the second server also a DC? What version form exchange are you running?
It is not recommended to run Exchange on Domain controllers, so i would move
the Exchange to member server.

OK. I understand. The second server will be also a DC where all AD will be
repleicated.
The exchange I am using is 2003 SP2, and I intend to leave the Xchnge intact
except the AD/DNS where I want this to be a secondary DC and not the first
one...
How can i move the exchange to a member server?

Hello isolabella,

Just to get you correct, both exisiting servers are DC's? Please describe
in detail what roles/functions the running servers have.

Hello isolabella,

It is not recommended by MS to demote a DC with exchange installed.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822179/en-us

So for my point of view you can do the following:

- add the new server as member server NOT DC, install exchange, move mailboxes
and public folders, then uninstall exchange from the old one

- leave both old DC's and also exchange there and install the new server
as third DC in the domain

What way do you like to go?

Best regards

Well, I was thinking of the second solution, but just to be fair with the
first option too, how can I move mailboxes and public folders to the new
machine? Then I will have to name the new server with the name of the old
exchange and IP address... (mailsrv and 192.168........) (same as the
existing one) while renaming on a second stem the old exchange to something
else..... (perhaps DNS server....)????

How about that?

Hello isolabella,

For moving and retiring an Exchange server see here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931/

You can use a different servername and ip address without problem. Normally
outlook will connect automatically to the new mail server. Did it myself
more often and works this way.

Best regards
