To create a striped volume using the Windows interface

Hi, I am new to this, so not sure where to post. I have just purchased a
SATA external hard drive . When I purchased it I was under the impression
that you pllugged it in and it would work...but it does not...it turns out I
need to Create a striped volume. I have used the help menu on the computer,
but the selection In Disk Management, right-click the unallocated space on
one of the dynamic disks where you want to create the striped volume, and
then click New Striped Volume….well the new striped volume is not highlighted
so I can not click on it...can anyone else.

I would suggest that you recheck the advice that you got to create a striped
volume!

A striped volume is created my combining two or more hard drives such that
the data in a file is distributed across the drives.
For instance two hard drives become one volume. In general the two drives
should be as close to identical as possible (yes I know there ways to do it
with dissimilar drives). and having one internal and one external/removable
seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

With a striped drive you trade off performance (improved) for reliability
(reduced). If either drive fails you have lost all data on the pair.

I do not have a SATA external drive so cannot comment directly. However in
general after you have plugged in an external drive that is 'empty' you will
need to format it (NTFS recommended) before it can be used.

Use your external hard drive solely for backup.

No. A "striped" drive is part of a RAID array. The system put bits of each
file on separate physical drives. The advantage to this setup is a marginal
improvement in efficiency (depending on the application) at the risk of
increased vulnerability (you lose EVERYTHING when one drive fails).

Forget about "striping."

You say the drive doesn't work when "plugged it in."

Into what did you plug it?
