I recently created a new user account for my wife. Prior to creating the
user account I downloaded all updates using my user account. I was
successful in getting the account created and a user icon. However, when I
clicked the icon I immediately got a pop up message stating "Setting up
personalizedsettings for windows desktop update. My system locks and this
point and I can do NOTHING with her user account. I tried deleting and
re-creating the account both as user and administrator with the same results.
I continually get the same message and the system hangs up for hours. I
contacted Microsoft, but got no answer other than links for investigation.
Ideas, anyone??

I can only offer a suggestion. 1.) remove your wife's user account. 2.) do a
system restore going back to the date ( if you can ) Before downloading
updates. After step 1 & 2, run your computer and see if it's back to normal.
If yes, then set up a user account for your wife. Let's forget about the
icon for now, just have the account opened and run it.If nothing goes awry,
add whatever you want, but one at a time. Run it, if ok, add the next item.
That way you'll know which item you shouldn't have added. By the way, make
sure you have the User Account Control (UAC) turned on. Good luck.
