Critcal Updates Fail

I have a client who is having issues with her Windows XP Pro client terminal.
I've gone onsite and started to do the windows Critical Updates. It shows
that there are 32 available - when I procede to download them it goes through
the list (1 of 32, 2 of 32 etc.) and after each it says "...failed!" When
they have all 'completed' and failed it gives a window that says "you're
computer had been updated successfuly" or something to that sort.

When I go back to download the updates again, the same 32 are there. Has
this issue been seen before? Are there any known fixes?

And what does the WindowsUpdate.log show ?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

What do the individual KBxxxxxx.log installation logs show ?
No offense, but if this is your client, it would *behoove* you to know
where relevant logs involved with doing Windows Update are located.
All of the above logs can be found in %windir%

Have you checked the Event Viewer for MsiInstaller errors (Application
log) ?
Are there errors in the System.log that relate to the Windows Update Agent ?

Error code 0x80070005 usually means there's a Permissions issue.
Are you 100% certain that the installation of SP2 caused this ?
IF so, can you prove it ? If you can, I'd certainly be willing to
forward the info and your proof along to MS.

FWIW the amount of posts seen here represent only 1% to 3% of all the
systems that utilized Microsoft's updating systems. No one posts here if
the updates install correctly, which they do for the VAST majority.

For the 0x80070005 error I'd suggest that you run FileMon to monitor
which file/folder is causing Access to be Denied:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...k/Filemon.mspx

Frankly, I'm surprised that there is no Access Denied errors in either
the KBxxxxxx.logs or the WindowsUpdate.log. They are located in the
WINDOWS directory (folder), BTW.

Roger,

You're mowst welcome. You said >> The manual method works fine

Not quite sure what that meant until I saw that KB927978 appears to have
installed correctly. This line from the WU.log shows

>> Local path
>> C:\CD_Image\WU\Software\en\com_microsoft.windowsxp \x86WinXP\com_microsoft.MSXML4_SP2_927978\msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe

that it was installed by you from the Windows Catalog site, since that's
the log file for it.

Post a recent section of the WindowsUpdate.log (note - there's no space
after Windows also located in %windir% so we can see it, please.

The Permissions issue is more likely related to a Registry key/subkey
than to a folder.
If that's the case, then suggest you check the setupapi.log also found
in %windir%. Perhaps we can locate an Access Denied error generated when
SP2 failed to install at first attempt.

"OpenKey" requests. Is there a certain key directory I should be looking at

Try using ProcMon instead of just RegMon. That will let you integrate
a FileMon trace with a RegMon trace. Then what you can do is find
the write event of the log records that you are interested in seeing more
detail for and it presumably will appear just before that in the trace.

You have to infer which write event matches which log record of course
but that is surprisingly easy by going by the line length and the write length.
E.g. I use Notepad's Status bar to show me the length of the line I'm
interested in and then find a write record which is 1 bigger than that which
has a context similar to the log record, e.g. timestamp approximately the
same, preceding and succeeding write events match the preceding and
following lines in the log by size too. Etc.

E.g. I think it would be interesting to see what all was happening before
this record was written.

To fix the 5 MS 2000 PCs I had to alter the permissions on dcomcnfg section pertaing to "my computer" rights.. Making sure system, interactive and adminsitrator were all given permission to launch. That fixed the problem, -- but dosen't tell me what caused it to begin with.

Then my laptop, that I had not updated (or used for awhile), an XP profesional with sp2 that had updated fine before, did the same thing to me this weekend.

Only comon thing between the 2000 and XP machines, automatic updates was disabled for awhile and I hadn't manually patched the units for awhile. Other 2000 PCs that I had patched over the past couple of months on the same network -- work perfectly fine.

Now isn't that interesting.

Unsure ...
- How your response is related to the original post.
- What the 'same 3 updates' are specifically (bet you do...)
- Windows Vista ______ 64-bit with Service Pack __
- What you have done to try and remdy the situation

Help others help you... Provide a little detail.

Describes how to or will reset permissions to what they should be on system
folders. I ran into god awful permission issues with winders updates and this
was a fix for me. Worth a go.

Also, run a command prompt as admin and

sfc /scannow

Might reveal a bit more.
