Critical Patch For Windows

Microsoft is advising that we dowload a patch for Windows becaiuse of a Wrom
hole. I can't seem to find it on the Microsoft website. Where is it?

Go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/s...isplaylang=en#

Click the 'Change' link next to United States and choose the language
desired.
Enter KB958644 in the Search field. Click Go.
Choose the update that is intended for the Version of Windows that is
installed. You neglected to mention that.
Download and save it.
Close all open browsers and programs.
Install the update.
Reboot the system.

The update would have automatically been downloaded and installed if
Automatic|Windows Update is Enabled and operable.

MowGreen, thanks for the link. It worked. I wasn't able to get this update
from Windows Update(I have XP Professional, SP2) or any other update for that
matter. All my updates continue to fail. Judging from the number of similar
posts, it sure seems like the problem is on Microsoft's end, caused by some
update or patch they issued recently. Very frustrating! Thanks again

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

KB958644 is offered via Automatic Updates and Windows Update.

Not likely, Mhairi. The issue lies with the auto updating components of
your system, a 3rd party firewall is blocking access to WU, and/or
malware may be present.

Is the system set up to receive Automatic Updates [open the AU applet in
the Control Panel to confirm] ?

Are either the Automatic Update| BITS services set to Disabled for
Startup type?
[Open the Services console by going to Start > Run > type in
services.msc
Click OK or press Enter.
Check the Properties of Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent
Transfer Services [BITS]. Startup type for AU must be set to Automatic.
BITS can be set to Manual or Automatic.
If the services are not running, then click the Start button to see if
they can run.

Or, try to update the system from either the Windows or Microsoft Update
sites. If the sites can not be accessed or the initial scan fails, close
IE, and post the last 50 or lines from the WindowsUpdate.log:
