Critical Update Does Not Install

I have an IBM Aptiva with Windows 98 running IE 6. This week for some
unknown reason, on startup, the system said something to the effect that it
had to reload the registry. It automatically reloaded and put my system back
to IE 5 (which was my original IE) plus dropped all the Windows updates. So
after it reloaded the registry, I clicked on Windows Update and lots of
critical updates appeared. I installed all of them, the system is back to IE
6, and all is running well.

But there is one item that even though Updates and View Installation
History shows that it is installed, apparently does not install. Every time
I go to Windows Update (even after rebooting), this update, Cumulative
Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009) displays as
needing to be installed. Yet History shows it successfully installed the
many times I tried to install it already.

I do not use Outlook Express so I used Install/Uninstall to even uninstall
it. Then I did the critical update again, but with the same result. The
update processes successfully, I close the Windows Update window, then from
settings go to Windows Update and Windows Update says that this KB837009
critical update should be installed.

For example the following are the results after running the process:

The following updates have been successfully installed:

Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)

View installation history

Then here is the Installation History:

date, description, or source, click the column headers.

on Windows Update. If you have subsequently restored your computer, or
reinstalled or uninstalled programs, some items listed here might no longer
be installed on your computer.

Successful Friday, December 17, 2004 Cumulative Security Update for Outlook
Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009) Web site

But as I said previously Windows Update still says I need to install this
critical update.

I ran "Spybot - Search & Destroy", "TweakNow RegCleaner", and "McAfee
Virus Scan" and the system is totally clean. All other programs are running
without a problem.

Can you help? Please let me know if I can provide any more information to
help you solve this mystery.

I appreciate your help. Thank you,

Hi

Try this:

This may fix your problem (be sure to reboot if offered):

Uninstall 823353 if it is installed (from the "Add or Remove
Programs" list in Control Panel)

Then download and install 837009 manually:

Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (837009)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-013.mspx

Then go to Windows Update to install 823353 again (a newer version
that includes and supersedes 837009).
