Try a manual download and installation:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Regarding the update 0kb -
Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder (you may also need to clear out any
temporary internet files etc):-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any downloaded updates.

Thanks for your reply.
After the first attempt at download when I received a BSOD, when I was
re-offered the download an info icon told me the update was downloaded
and I should select install again.
I took a deep breath and tried again, this time it installed OK.
After the IDE disaster, when I had to do a complete re-install, I was
more than doubtful but as I was able to reboot after BSOD on this one, I
took a chance.
Thanks again.

Perhaps it was the deep breath that did it - pleased it turned out well.
Yes, the IDE disaster was not pleasant and not simple for some to rectify. Hopefully it
never happens again.
Beware of downloading any hardware drivers etc from WU. Always check the manufacturer's
site first.
