Tried to update sp1 and add Movie Maker and received the following after trying to manually re-start my computer:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page"
and this " Send error number to Microsoft (0x80004005)". Tried to use the troubleshooter section, but this number is not part of the page.

I don't know if this relates to the security update, Movie Maker installation or both. What does it mean?

Thanks.

Which security update was installed when doing the Movie Maker update ?
Can you get the system to boot up ? If you can not, try to boot the
system to Safe Mode and uninstall the "security update" from
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel :

A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315222

Choose Safe Mode - Option 1

If you can not boot to Safe Mode attempt to use System Restore from
a Comman Prompt. Roll the system back to just before doing the
updating :

The most recent IE6 Service Pack 1- just released. I have no problem using my computer, but I did not restart my computer after installing the critical update. I restarted it after installing the Movie Maker update. Now I'm not sure if the critical update occurred at all. Movie Maker appears to be okay.

I just went to the Windows Update page and had it scan for needed critical updates. There are none and an installation history shows that both updates I attepted to install were installed.

And, I still don't know what error 0x80004005 is. Or what I should do about it.

Thanks for any more info you can provide.

Vicki,

See if the IE update is listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel. It will be listed as " Internet Explorer Q867801 ".
If it is listed, uninstall it and then download the update for your
version of IE from the links on this page :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-025.mspx
Save it to disk, close IE, temporarily disable your antivirus
program and any script blocking component of it, and install the
update by double clicking it. When the update has installed , reboot
the system. Reenable your antivirus when the rebooting is done.
Does this resolve the error message ?

I did what you suggested and everything seems to be okay. I do have IE 6 and again, that was the critical update Windows "selected" for me. Interesting, tho, when I returned to the e-mail and clicked on Read the Response, a very different format appeared. I'm generally taken to the discussion group with the Microsoft orange header and all - which is where I was taken when I first clicked on Read the Response. This time, I'm at the blue header, the coloumns are wider, the font is larger and different - I wouldn't have expected that to be a result of the IE6 Critical Update.

Also, when an error code is listed AND it is not listed at the Microsoft site, how does one know what it means? I still don't know, even with the corrective actions.

In this case it is documented (sort of) in the SUS Deployment Guide

<quote>
80004005
E_Fail
General error or Unknown Error

</quote>

Isn't that useful?

Thanks, Robert. I couldn't even find that. So, why am I not surprised? But,
I've learned alot. These groups are quite valuable and just chock full of
information.

Many attempt to document specific problem symptoms for support personnel.
Even more clues about their meaning can be found in their context in the logs.
Unfortunately though it is often the case that programmers realize
that they may not have thought of everything and have a check
called "This will never happen." or "How did we get here?" etc. ; )
This particular code is probably given after a recovery procedure has
been invoked so it could be your clue to look in the logs for earlier
more specific error messages.
