critical update for IE 6 sp1

I have started the u\setup at least 8 times and keep
getting the message about closing all applications and
trying set up again. Everything in my startup tab is
unchecked, and still the message that serup did not
conpletely install.

Are you referring to a specific update for IE or an upgrade of IE to
IE 6 SP1 ? Which version of Windows are you using ?

Give this a try : Create a folder in My Documents and name it IEBak.
Navigate to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
and move all of the files to IEBak.
Temporarily disable your antivirus software and try running setup again.
If IE installs you can delete the entire IEBak folder; if not, move
all of the files back to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information . In either case, reenable your AV afterwards .
