critical update not recognized

Starting about February 8 2005: Windows Update fails to detect the necessity
to install critical updates and patches (although identified by MBSA!); no
notification in the taskbar (although option is set).
The patches can be downloaded and installed manually.
I tried following, without effect: disabled Norton Anti-Virus, disabled
Norton Personal Firewall (SP2 firewall off), deleted IE6 history, deleted IE6
temporary internet files, installed uictl.cab whereas installation KB842774
(BITS2.0/WinHTTP5.1) failed as unnessary.
The file WindowsUpdate.log reads:
ISusInternal API failed CClientCallRecorder: DisconnectCall with error
0x8024000c
The problem occurs on a VIAO Notebook with OEM Windows XP Pro (SP2), part of
a homenetwork.
Any suggestions which would reactivate the automatic Windows Update service
would be highly appreciated.
