Critical update situation is a disgrace?

Microsoft is losing the plot. It produces insecure systems and then denies
the fixes to its customers. What better reason can there be to turn to Linux
or Apple? At least we should use non MS Internet browsers - Opera and
Mozilla Firefox - and kick the Outlooks into touch. Carry on shooting
yourself in the foot, Microsoft. Did you hear that? No, I don't suppose you
did. You've got too big for your own good.

I agree. I can't believe this site has gotten worse over the past years
rather than better.
I have found during this past year that many of the updates coming in on the
Auto Update site give problems. Either downloading or installing or giving
error messages or screwing something up on my computer.

So I have generally taken to seeing which ones are there to be updated and
then finding them either on a MS download site or go to the MS Updates
catalog http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp and get
them from there and SAVE them to a folder first and then istall later.

Most of these problems started when MS offered Microsoft Updates instead of
only Windows Updates. I, in fact then disabled Microsoft Updates and only use
Windows Updates and go to Office Updates to get them seperately. My Windows
Update site works fine now but as I said often things screw up in the process
of DL and Installing the updates so I use the procedure discribved above.

All systems are ultimately insecure and their level of insecurity varies
from day to day as new vulnerabilities are detected and fixed.

I'm not sure how Microsoft is denying the fixes? Also switching just gets
you a new set of headaches. Check out the CERT summary of security issues
for a week here:

http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB05-285.html

As for browsers they also have vulnerabilities. I tried Firefox and didn't
like it. To get the functionality of my prefered browser (Avant an IE shell)
I needed to install numerous plugins (more attack vectors). If IE is
properly configured and used intelligently it's likely as secure as any
other browser.

So why are you still using Microsoft? Make the switch and shut your pie hole.
