Critical Updates Hangs after SP2 Upgrade

I just upgraded my Windows XP Pro to SP2 from CD-Rom. The upgrade seemed to
run normally.
I selected not to get automatic updates upon re-boot.
After re-boot, I ran Windows Update. There is an indication that 4 updates
are available. At the same time, the window shows that the amount to dowload
is 0 KB and 0 min. When I press Install, I get a window telling me that the
installation process has started, but then it stalls.

I am running Norton Anti-Virus, which I turn off before the Install, and
Norton Firewall. For a while I was running both Norton Firewall and Windows
Firewall. I have now turned off Windows Firewall.

In one of my attempts I left Windows Firewall and turned off Nortone
Firewall. The installation went a little further and gave me the message that
the initialization of the installation was done. It gave the message that the
first update was being installed, then the installation stalled.

No error message received.

Note, before SP2 install I ran Lavasoft's program and Norton Antivirus for
problems.
Note, I had installed SP2 before, and un-installed it because of the same
problem, before re-installing it.

Your help appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've searched MS support / knowledge base
and have not found any references to this problem.

I found a way around to solve my problem. I turn off Norton AntiVirus and
Norton Internet Security and set them not to start on re-boot. I re-start the
computer without Norton AV or Norton IS. Then go to Windows Update. The
Updates installed very smootly without problems. I restart the computer, and
then turn on Norton AV and Norton IS to start automatically on boot.

I should say that turning off Norton AV and Norton IS without rebooting does
not work. In other words, after Norton starts, turning it off does not mean
that all settings are returned to normal.

There is clearly a conflict between Windows Update and Norton AV or Norton
IS. I still do not know what the conflict is but, I know how to get around it
temporarily.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks, Miguel. It helped a lot!

For weeks after installing SP2, I had similar symptoms: Under XP Pro SP2,
with Norton Internet Security 2005 running, updates would always hang after
the download was successfully completed and the initialization process had
begun. Furthermore, it would be impossible to cancel the installation of the
updates without terminating the Windows Update application in the Task
Manager.

I spent several hours on the phone earlier today with MS Tech Support. We
were unable get Windows Update to work. We were forced to manually download
and install the updates. The manual installation did not hang, even when
Norton is running.

But I wanted to try to get Windows Update to work. So, I tried your
solution and it worked! Namely, I set the Norton options to not
automatically turn on Norton antivirus autoprotect at Windows startup and to
not automatically turn on Norton Firewall at Windows startup. Then, I
rebooted and ran Windows Update. The installation of the updates ran
flawlessly!

There would appear to be a clear incompatibility between Norton Internet
Security and Windows Update.

Hi

Most likely it is caused by Norton Internet Security blocking outbound
connections from SVCHOST.EXE

You need to open up for svchost.exe, more here on how to configure
Norton Firewall to let Windows Updates through:
