Critical updates, IE7 and Hotmail

Win XP Home edition, SP2 fully uptodate until now, 1GB memory on an almost
new laptop, plenty of disc space.
I accepted the 17 critical updates offered. Everything went well and system
restarted ok.
In IE7 I am able to access all normal sites so far except for Hotmail. For
that I get to the username/password screen, put in my password and then the
screen goes blank and the status bar at the bottom shows quickly repeated
messages 'waiting for .....' most of them '....mail/mail.asp' I have left it
for several minutes at a
time. I have deleted cookies and cleaned up the disc. Still no change.

Hotmail is fine in Mozilla Firefox.

Any suggestions as to where to look?

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

2. If you uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), does this
behavior persist?
