Critical Updates Install Failure

Windows XP Media Center Edition system.

There are five critical updates that fail to install on my system that list
the error code: 0x80240017. I find nothing on this code in the MS KB yet on
a French web site: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/doc.jm/WU5-ERR.htm , Eric
Brodish of MS is given credit for providing a long list of error codes.
0x80240017 supposedly means: install is not needed because no updates are
applicable. If this description is accurate, why does WU continually try to
install the updates? It would seem that once an update was determined to be
not needed, WU would quit trying to install it. By the way, the "do not
show this again" box is grayed out.
