I've just bought a new laptop with windows xp home edition already installed
(but not setup) on it. I've only installed Norton antivirus, zone alarm pro,
mozilla firefox, mozilla thunderbird and openoffice.org on it so far and I
haven't had time to aquire any ad-ware, spyware, malware or the like as I've
only browsed microsoft sites, haven't downloaded any emails and haven't
installed anything dubious. Everything seemed to be running smoothly, but
then the other day when I set up my internet connection, I tried to log into
MSN messenger. It told me that I had to update to 6.2 to be able to use it
(which is really f@&#ing annoying as I don't want 6.2 anyway and I physically
cannot use it at all until I update it!) so I start the tedious download
process. Just after my messenger update installation file starts downloading
the autoupdate job starts up too. well my messenger downloads the
installation file but alas, alack, when i try to run it, nothing happens and
the next time I try to use messenger it prompts me to update all over again!
well, i figured, as messenge 6.2 seems to be all part and parcel of sp2,
maybe i should wait for the autoupdate to complete first (which incidentally,
takes somewhere in the neighbourhood around 4 hours on my shitty dialup
modem). so i occupy myself whilst the downloads going and then the small
yellow shield icon in the taskbar says its ready to install the updates -
yay! However, my enthusiasm was short lived as when i tried installing the
updates (KB886185 and KB867282) they both "failed" and the final verdict was
that the "updates were unable to be successfully installed". The really
horrible thing about it was that the Automatic updates manager offered me no
reason at all why they failed, it just told me that they did. it didn't even
offer any condolences for my strife and the online troubleshooters were
f#&@ing useless. they kept expecting me to have an error code which windows
never gave me. I tried manually downloading the updates from the windows site
(in IE) but even the downloads "failed" there (once again for no apparent
reason). I've still got the downloads in the cache and it keeps prompting me
to installed them whereupon it will promptly f%@k up again. I suspected that
maybe they just didn't download properly and if I could redownload them, they
might work. So, any suggestions? Has anybody else had this problem?

I toom have had this exact problem with trying to install sercice pack 2,
though my flash model takes anywhere between 4 and 13 hours to achieve the
same result, Updates were unsuccessfull. It doesnt matter if I start them or
Auto Update does, same thing and no code but still the prompt to install
them. Dont scream to loud as your not alone, and my computer is so close to
going out the window its not funny.
CAN ANY BODY HELP US???

I thought i heard others screaming with frustration. I am experiencing the
same problem with windows updates failing to install with no message or
reason given. I have 21 updates that will not install. I have recently
reinstalled XP on a desk top and in know time at all I can not update. I
also ran into trouble trying to install Spring Cleaning software. It went
through the initial install but the is no sign of the program after the
mandatory reboot. Can anyone help?
