Critical updates wont install

I just received the latest round of critical updates which are downloaded
automatically.
I get the "some updates could not be installed" and there is no
windowsupdate.log to view.
What is wrong?

Try one (or both) of these:

Solution to try (1):

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Then click "GO"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Reboot and try again with the updates...


Solution to try (2):

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
cutting/pasting as directed.)

- Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
Yes when you are prompted.
- Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window:

I have exactly the same problem, which seems to have extended itself into
software and hardware upgrades too.

Do *not* get hardware updates from the Windows/Microsoft updates web page
unless your hardware happens to be Microsoft manufacturered... Always get
the hardware drivers (when you need them) from the actual manufacturer of
said product.

To find out what loaded and what did not load: click on start, select windows
updates, it will automatically take you to the windows update website. Once
there, on the left side of the screen, select updates history, it will show
what updates have been downloaded to your specific computor and it will also
name the ones that did not. You can select them and it will state why they
failed. Chances are that previous updates that were critical did not get
downloaded, most of the time, the security articles that is necessary for the
systems registery. I think this would be easier to try, it worked for me.

Guys, I was having the same issue because I have a dual boot running XP on
both. I used the Dial-a-fix program and it worked like a charm. Thanks very
much for helping out on this issue.

Dial a Fix worked here as well --- after dial a fix it did want to re-install
90 updates - obviously many, many of which had already been installed. All
is now working as it should though.
