Cryptic message on startup

Running Vista 64 bit Home Premium....

I recently (just a few days ago) started getting a message on startup:

Failed to create empty document

It appears in a dialogue box. The box has the word: Smoni in the
header area. I can click OK or close the box and everything seems OK

I've searched for any file called Smoni with no success, and looked at
the startup items (Control Panel.... change startup programs... open
Windows defender...) and can't see anything that I think would be
generating this message.

I did several "new" things before I started getting the message, added
another FreeAgent PRO Firewire drive, installed a couple of updates
from Microsoft, but nothing that should be causing this.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

never mind, I think the problems is resolved....

I have switched my multifunction printer from USB connected to
networked, and in so doing had inadvertently changed a setting that
was generating the message.

An odd message and and even odder solution. Glad you resolved it though.

It would appear that you're not alone eg

Yes. thanks for the link. no mention if he was using a Brother
Multi-function printer (which I am). I tried to comment but it's a
forum that you have to join, and I try to avoid those.
