What version of Windows (and SP) are you using? Not all versions of Windows
list cryptographic services in the list.

The following is taken from MS KB article 822798 and may help, depending on
how you answer the above.

To register .dll files that are associated with Cryptographic Services,
follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after
each command:
regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
exit

Note Click OK if you are prompted.

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 does not include the Sccbase.dll file. If you
are running a version of Windows 2000, omit the Sccbase.dll file.

4. Restart your computer.
5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
6. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after
each command:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll

Note Click OK if you are prompted.

Probably best to Restart the computer once again at this point.

If that doesn't work, post back with your Windows version info, and just
what problem you are trying to solve.

I tried your suggestions.Thanks but it did not help.
I can't download or install updates.

when I choose one update to download and install manually, it gave me the
cryptographic error.

I am running Windows XP Professional 2002 service pack 2.
these updates won't install.

Hi;

Did you try the steps on the webpage Taurarian suggested?

Boot into Safe Mode; open the Windows\System32 folder and delete the
subfolder named "CatRoot2" then Restart back into normal mode.

Next, open RegEdit and go to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs

In the right pane, double-click the "Start" DWORD item to bring up the
Modify window, then change the value to 2 (hex or decimal doesn't matter).

While still in RegEdit, scroll up to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CryptSvc

In the right pane, do the same for "Start" to set the value there to "2"

Close all open apps, and Restart the computer. After the Restart, click
Start/Run and type "services.msc" + Enter. Do you see "Remote Procedure
Call (RPC)" in the list, and is it Started, and set to Automatic? If yes,
do you now see the Cryptographic Services in that list?

If you don't see the RPC service (or it is not Started), then go to the
website Taurarian suggested
(http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html) and about one-quarter
down the page you will see "Tip 2:" for getting the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service running. You need to follow those steps exactly.
