Hi -

Is there a way to get Ctrl+C to simply copy whatever is selected to the
Clipboard instead of bringing up a context menu forcing you to then
select Copy? (This is the way Ctrl+C used to work in Windows XP, and
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to work the same way in Vista.)

For example, if I select some text in Notepad and then press Ctrl+C, I
get a context menu listing:

_U_ndo
Cu_t_
_C_opy
_P_aste
_D_elete
Select _A_ll
_R_ight to Left Reading order
_S_how Unicode control characters
_I_nsert Unicode control character >
_O_pen IME
_R_econversion (grayed)

If I then select Copy from the context menu, the function works fine.
I'm just trying to eliminate the unnecessary extra step.

This context menu behavior occurs in several applications (including
Internet Explorer, Word 2007, Notepad, Windows Explorer), so I'm
guessing it's controlled by Windows, but I'm not sure. Also, it happens
most of the time, not all the time.

Thanks for any help.

- Jeff

That's how it works here!

described??

I don't have a solution for you, but I'll confirm that XP and Vista
work exactly the same way in this regard. Yes, that's the way Ctrl-C
normally should work (the copy is direct and there should not be a
context menu) and that's the way it works here.

I've never seen the behavior you describe, but it almost seems like
Windows for some reason thinks you pressed Alt-E rather than Ctrl-C.

Especially since you say that this doesn't happen all the time, I
wonder if it could be a flaky keyboard. Can you try another one?

Ken Blake is a lot more skilled with Vista than I am or ever will be. Try
his suggestion to switch keyboards.

Crap in the keyboard can cause weird behaviour. Try another keyboard, and
if that is fine, you can try cleaning the faulty one with a strong vacuum
cleaner, or try take the keys off and clean (takes a while).
