past many months have not been able to download xp critical updates. cleaned
pc of all spyware/malware and still get the same error: "Set up could not
verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure the cryptographic
servive is running on the computer." I get similar aciveX error when trying
to download McAfee firewalls too.

Carey

I tried steps 1 to 6 and update still does not work. It gives the following
error: "current settings prohibit running activeX controls on this page". I
have checked all the settings for the internet options. they are OK. As per
step 7 I tried to download the updates. tried 2 diffrent updated. Waas able
to save on to my deskton. When extracting it goes through the process of
extracting to a directory and errors with the following msg:"The system
cannot find the file specified. Installation did not complete". when I try to
download IE6 sp1 , it gives msg " a newer version is installed"

Why stop there? "Steps 1 to 6" of which Method?

Assuming this was step 2 of Method 7 that you were trying
search for diagnostic files created by the install process.
If necessary try to invoke an update's /verbose logging
and inspect that log for clues too. Give more details about
what you are doing and what you are seeing if you need more help.

That is not an appropriate thing to try on your OS
except in a very special circumstance which I strongly suspect
will not apply in your case.

Thanks Robert
How do I invoke the update's /verbose logging for being able to view this
log for clues as you have suggested.

It may depend on what update you are trying to install.
So far I can't tell what you have been trying to do at all
(other than the repair procedure that Carey suggested to you.)
However, usually, you can add a /? to an update's command line
and then it will give you a brief synopsis of the other switches
it will accept. Also, if the update has a security bulletin associated
with it you can go there and find more details about your install options, etc.

Good luck
