Cummulative Security Update for OE 6 SP1

When I check Microsoft Updates I am informed that I need to install the
Critical Update KB837009 for OE 6 SP1. I download and get a succesful
installation message but every subsequent check for Microsoft updates reports
again that the same patch needs to be installed. Having checked the programs
on my PC I have OE 6 and Internet 6 SP1. Should I have OE 6 SP1 and are the
two out of sync? Is this the reason why I get the repetitive patch update
message? If so how do I bring the two programs in sync. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Hi,

Most likely because you have newer OE updates already installed, and
the detect mechanism fails to see it.

If found in Add/Remove Programs, uninstall KB823353 and KB897715.

Now see if you ca manually install KB837009.

Download KB837009 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-013.mspx

When KB837009 is installed, then manually re-install KB823353 first,
and then KB897715.

Download KB823353 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-018.mspx

Download KB897715 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms05-030.mspx

Hi - Thanks v. much for your reply. I can't find the 2 listed modules in my
Add/Remove programs panel. Can I go ahead and attempt to manually install
KB837009? FYI the following exist on my Add/Remove programs panel
IE Q891781
MS Data Access Components KB870669
MS IR 6 SP1 and Internnet Tools
MS OE 6

Btw I am still on Windows 98.

[Did you post this query in another MS newsgroup?]

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options >
General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep pressing the
F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe Mode > Enter.)

3. In Safe Mode, rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to
C:\ (the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot into Windows and see if the problem persists.

Hi

Firstly I have not posted the query in another MS newsgroup (not to my
knowledge anyway). Secondly, thanks for the advice. I followed your
instructions and saved KB837009 in my Desktop and checked it was there in
Normal mode. However, when I reboot under Safe mode it does not show up in my
Desktop. Any clues?

Sounds like you're logged in as Admin User. Switch to your User Account
(Profile) and you should see "your" Desktop, Joe.

Sorry I'm a bit of a novice. During the reboot (pressing F8 key) how do I
switch to my User Account (profile) having selected option 3 to start in safe
mode?

Thanks mate for trying to help me out. The log off option didn't appear under
start but I copied the file to the C root dir via another means. When I ran
it said 'cannot find the file 'C:\KB837009.EXE' 9 or one of its
components)..'. I had noticed when I tried to run the EXE previously in
normal mode it complained that the update required OE 6.0 Service Pack1 to be
installed. Would this be why? Checking my OE I have 6.00.2800.1123.

There's no need to boot into Safe Mode anyway. Skip that step in PA Bear's
instructions and follow the other ones.
