Others seem to have had trouble installing this update.

I did too - it was one of about 8 updates needed this month. All the others
were fine though I had to use custom updating to avoid the IE update.

As a last resort I switched off Norton Internet Security and SpySweeper and
tried again (the updates had already downloaded OK). Lo and behold - it
worked! I don't know precisely why but I'm posting this in case it provides
the answer for somebody else.

Thanks, John.
I am running Windows 2000, and Microsoft just responded by telling me I
would have to pay for help in installing this one because they "no longer
offer warranty support for Windows 2000." Your suggestion worked like a charm.

Spysweeper is the problem. Shut down the IE shields and it installs.
FINALLY! I also had called Microsoft and was told I would have to pay $240
for support installiing this download. That is outrageous! They send out a
patch that does not work with SpySweeper running and then expect me to pay
for their help fixing the problem. Unbelieveable!

Well, why should MS fix your problem caused by an third party application?
Did you inform the vendor of SpySweeper about the problem that his software
causes?

Unbelieveable,

All Microsoft had to do was tell people to turn off their antispyware or
antivirus programs prior to installing the update. Everyone these days runs
(or should run) these type of programs. Microsoft is certainly aware of
that. Microsoft should have also known that antispyware or antivirus
programs would interefere with the installation. Microsoft designs its
software to work properly with other common programs all the time. This is
no different.

You do make one good point. I will let Spysweeper know about this problem.

That's common sense - or at least has been.

I don't - okay, I'm using Brain 1.0 SP39 Build 2609.

Bye,

Apparently, it is not common sense to turn off antispyware/antivirus software
before downloading Microsoft patches. Look at how many postings there have
been on this issue on this site just in the past few days since the patch
first came out. There are many. Now imagine how many other people are out
there that are having this problem that have not posted here and how many
will have this problem in the future. Also, I have downloaded hundreds of
Microsoft patches over the years, and I believe this is the first time I have
had to turn off antispyware/antivirus software to complete the installation.

PS - I just sent an email to the maker of Spysweeper about this problem.

For the experienced ones it is and has ever been. There have even
been MSKB articles stressing this.

That's the way Russian Roulette works.
