Cumulative security update fails to install...

Actually it was the following that would not install. Have tried several
times.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB937143)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB936021)

Any suggestions on how to get it them to install - the system has slowed
down to a crawl. I have tried turning off my virus software, but that hasn't
helped.

Have a look into the "KB937143-IE7.log" and "KB936021.log" files to be
found in the Windows folder for any error messages.

I have tried, but no such log file exists. The last log file was for a java
update earlier in the same day.

Oh, I'm pretty sure they are there - in case you don't chase your
System with some "Cleaning" programs. You may wanna try the following
to see the LOG file's content:

Start -> Run -> %windir%\KB937143-IE7.log [Hit Enter key]
Start -> Run -> %windir%\KB936021.log [Hit Enter key]

"Something", most likely a software running in the background, is
restricting access to the registry. Writing premissions are needed
to complete the installation. Please disable *all* applications
running in the background, especially "Security" software and enable
the Windows Firewall before re-applying the update.

I see your point, however I shut down everything I could via taskmgr and was
still unable to install the update. I don't have any security software
installed on my computer and windows firewall is enabled. I still get the
same error:

Disable *every* entry you'll find under "Start -> Run -> msconfig [Hit
Enter] -> System Start" and let Windows reboot and apply the update
afterwards. Still no joy?

Hi Ottmar, This update is really giving me a headache.
I disabled everything in MSCONFIG and re-started after the warning about
starting in diagnostic mode I attempted to re-install the update. The
following updates where unable to be installed "Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB937143)"

Tried option 2 in your previous link and the update worked. Not sure though
that MS should be releasing Updates that require manual registry corrections
in order to update..

Phew, that was a tough update. I had to follow method 2 and was able to
reset the permissions on 2 of the keys. SYSTEM had full access, but
Administrators had only "Read Only" access. Thanks very much for your help,
I would never have figured this out on my own. I have 2 other updates that
refuse to install also, but they aren't critical updates so I will attempt to
debug them as per this new enlightement. Thanks again Freudi.
