A few days ago, Windows Update repeatedly presented this 2.8Mb update for
download. After the 10th download and install, I turned Windows Update off to
prevent further notifications to download the same update yet again. My
update history shows that it has been successfully installed twice, however
it does NOT show up in my "add/remove programs" list, which currently
prevents me from uninstalling the update.

Since the update, I have had four occurrences of plug-and-play event ID: 256
and 257). I am also seeing random but frequent 1-2 second pauses in mouse
operation and random ejection of the USB mouse, forcing the use of keyboard
shortcuts to exit open windows and shut down the system. A cold boot always
temporarily restores mouse operation, but a hot restart does not.

Does anyone have any advice? If I can't get the problem sorted via this NG,
then I feel forced to format my drive and reinstall windows, and then turn
off WU forever, since my need for the internet is very limited and therefore
the tiny risk I take by not updating my computer appears to be less of a risk
than allowing WU to update my computer as it deems necessary.

Re-enable Automatic Updates and see if 867801 is still offered. MS
supposedly fixed this "detection logic" problem on their end about a week
ago.

Please revisit the Windows Update site with Internet Explorer and
do a search for any needed update. KB/Q867801 shouldn't be reoffered
now. Afterwards reenable AutoUpdate.

In case you're still offered KB/Q867801 (which shouldn't be the
case since MS has fixed an error in the detection logic for
Windows 2000 on May 10/11th which has been the cause for the
offering of an outdated, long replaced and therefore unnedded
update), you may try the following:

Download http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip for a
q&d fix. Download the file and extract the containing "Q867801-WUFix.reg".
Afterwards double click the REG file and let it merge into the registry.
Finally shut down all opened IE windows and see if WU/AU still offers
KB/Q831167.

Bye,
Freudi
