Thank you very much for the interesting document Bear.
I already tried by safe mode and by deactivating services and
applications by msconfig
before your doc, however now I got how read better the log and the
installation seems to succeed
many times..
However I'm continuing to receive this update on the taskbar, I mean it
is tedious and apparently without reason.
ciao
Daniele

After some weeks the problem reappeared to me apparently without
reason.
I mean I received a new offer about the same update and I could not
install it.
And.. now it is gone again, :-), without the reason too.
Now, gone that above, I start to have the same problem with that:
Definition Update 1.13.1286.1 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)
But it is not yet gone.. or reappeared more times!
I have already tried to disable all possible things from msconfig.
I will do more tries: I found some installation packages form Microsoft
and Apple
a good pastime: what pain!

Just to post it at time, Im checking it:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...n&Hash=YYCGHT7

Update for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (KB898715)

This fix addresses the issue with Windows Installer 3.1 and
installation of system protected files described in KB Article #898715.

Overview
Before the release of Windows Installer 3.1, during a silent
installation process, a package could not install a later version of a
file that was protected by the Windows File Protection (WFP) feature.
However, the installation process would continue and would report as
successful.

With the release of Windows Installer 3.1, this behavior has changed.
In version 3.1, the silent installation process does not succeed and
then rolls back the installation if the silent installation process
cannot install the WFP-protected file. To resolve this problem, obtain
the KB160810 update package.
