This error code has been reported before, but the user never came back to
tell us which of the suggested fixes solved their problem. See the previous
thread at

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...f-167866fa40ed

I suggest starting with "Dial-a-fix" 0.60 beta from
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_beta to repair Windows Updates, BITS,
and crypto services, etc, then following other options in the previous
thread.

You should also ensure that you disable any third-party anti-virus,
anti-malware, firewall, or download accelerators before attempting these
updates.

Please let us know which fix worked for you.

Robin,

Thanks for the recommendations, I will download DAF, give it a go and post
my findings back.

Regards

Pank.

Robin,

I tried a couple of things last night:-

Firstly, I disabled all 3rd party anti virus products and then did a
download. Unfortunately this made no difference.

Secondly, I tried your recommendation and installed Dial-a-fix. This gave me
the option to fix 3 items, I decided not to choose these as I am happy with
my configuration, and therefore dial-a-fix did not help to resolve my issue.

O by the way, my OS is XP Home.

Any more ideas?

Dial-a-fix does not change any configuration. It just mends things that
tend to become broken, such as DLL registrations.

Robin,

DAF did not highlight any thing (such as DLL') that required fixing.

Someone has recommended that I look at the Registry to ensure that the
Program Files has not moved drives. I intend to have a look at that tonight
and post my finding later.

It doesn't do that. You have to select the things you want it to mend, and
it then mends them. It cannot tell beforehand whether anything is broken
and tell you about it.

OK, I will run DAF tonight and post back later as to its success/failure.

No. Third party firewalls such as Norton and ZoneAlarm have been clearly
implicated in some Windows Update failures. The native Windows Firewall is
fine.
