Cumulative Security Update for OE6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)

I keep getting a message in Windows Update that I should install the update
KB837009 for Outlook Express 6. I install it, and everything seems to be ok,
but when switching on my machine again I am informed by windows update that
I need to instal this critical update. Looking back in the installation
history it has been added about 8 or 9 times! I have windows 98SE. Can
anybody advise as to what is happening and what should I do.

In that case, I usually stop the service of Automatic updates, rename the
folder Software Distribution and start the service again.
Then I force the download and installation and it's ok.

Hi happypagey,

If you happen to have KB823353 installed, that supersedes KB837009. (See
"What updates does this release replace?" under "Frequently asked questions
(FAQ) related to this security update" under "General Information" at ->

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-018.mspx ).

Windows Update (WU) is not supposed to try to install KB837009, but
something is in mismatch here, so WU tries anyway.

You will not be able to install KB837009 without first un-installing KB823353.

This may fix your problem:

Uninstall 823353 if it is installed (from the "Add or Remove Programs"
list)(be sure to reboot if offered).

Then, install KB837009 from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then try going to Windows Update to see if it offers you KB823353. If not,
you can install it from here (even though Windows 98 is not listed as being
supported, it IS listed as being supported if you change languages, so it
should work):

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including
offline files) via IE: Tools > Options > General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the
problem persists.

This resolution will not work in Win98(SE).
