OS Win2000 Prof.
Outlook Express 6

Windows/Microsoft updater tells me that I must install security update
(KB823353) to Outlook Express. I installed it and the Updater still tells me
to do the install. Did it again and again... no solution. How do I fix this
pain in the neck issue?

Thank you,

Open support calls to fir windows update.
Only many people complaining about their brtoken software will make them
want to do something.
Windows update is broken by the last round of updates, evident by the
massive increase in posted issues with it over the last two weeks.

Hi,

If you have the security update KB897715 (MS05-030) installed,
it could be caused by that.

Temporarily uninstall KB897715 (from Add/Remove Programs), and see if
KB823353 (MS04-018) installs successfully. Then install KB897715 again.

More info/workarounds here as well:

If "Windows 2000 Hotfix-KB897715" isn't found in Add/Remove Programs in
Win2K SP4:

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options >
General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB823353) from the following link, saving it to your desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB823353.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB823353.EXE /N:V (Note the space) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows]. MSOE.DLL should be v6.0.2800.1437; INETCOMM.DLL
should be v6.0.2800.1441.

7. Check in at Windows Update to see if the problem persists. (Windows
Update should now offer you 897715 again: Install it.)
