For more than a week and a half I have been trying to get an update.

Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353)

Running Win2000. Trend Micro house call will scan and tell me I need this
update. Go to MS and update and it says I need this update.

so far so good.

It does its thing and I thought all was well.

Few days later I check update and again it says I need this same update. I
click on it and it says that it has already been downloaded but not
installed. WHAT????

OK, so I click to install it and all seems to be well.

Happened to go to trend micro again today and AGAIN it said I need this
update. So back to MS and guess what? it says I need this update.

Again click on it and again it says that it has already been downloaded but
not installed. I click to intall and all seems to go well.

I check history and find that yes three times now it says that I have
successfully done this update.

confused. Have I or haven't I? If it says that it is sucessfull then how
come everytime I have MS check for updates it says I need to install it???
Why is it in the history that I have sucessfully done it three times now?

Could something be removing it? What?

Hi,

If you have the security update KB897715 (MS05-030) installed,
it could be caused by that.

Temporarily uninstall KB897715 (from Add/Remove Programs), and see if
KB823353 (MS04-018) installs successfully. Then install KB897715 again.

More info/workarounds here as well:

It wouldn't remove it
Said there was a problem that it may have already been removed and did I
want to remove it from the add/remove list.

Windows update again says I need the OE update.

If it was really removed wouldn't it show in the update list as one I needed?

any other way to remove it?

listed in add/remove are Hotfix

Hi,

From Start/Run:

%windir%\$NtUninstallKB897715-OE6SP1-20050503.210336$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

(the above assumes that you have IE6/OE6 installed)

Alternative workarounds here as well:

Uninstall 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB887797' and reboot > Check in at Windows
Update (repeatedly) to install (1) 823353, (2) 887797 [may not be offered]
and then finally (3) 897715.

To install manually:

1. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e.,
v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install KB823353 via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-a1a3da675baf

3. Reboot and install KB897715 via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518
