The update for KB939653 fails to download. Has done so for a while now. Any
suggestions? Can it be downloaded outside of Microsoft Update?

You can download KB939653 from here:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...spx?q=KB939653

Look for the *specific* update for the Version of IE and the Version of
Windows that is installed on your system under the 'Title' column.

When you find the update that is *specific* for the Version of IE and
the Version of Windows that is installed on your system, click the
Add button to the right of it, then click on 'view basket (1) ' toward
the top of the page. If there is no (1) present then you did not click
the Add button.
You'll see a ' Download Options ' page
Click the Browse button
Choose 'Desktop', then click the Continue button on the bottom right of
the page.

When the download completes click the Close button.

Close the browser and any other open programs.
Click on Start > Run > then click the Browse button
Click the Desktop icon in the left frame
Click on the newly created folder that contains the update, then click
the Open button
Click on the update, then click the Open button again
Now click OK

Restart the system after the installation completes.

This is my first time posting to anything like this, so please forgive me if
I do something out of the ordinary or not acceptable. I have also gotten this
error KB939653; along with KB941649 Update for Windows Vista, KB905866 Update
for Windows mail Junk E-mail Filter and KB933729 Security Update for Windows
Vista. They have failed every day since 11/30/07. All with the same error
code of 80070002.

I have followed the "Help" screen suggestions, I have been back & forth on
e-mail to tech support, and no resolution. One tech had me do a "clean boot"
and disable all startup items and 3rd party services. It sure did disable
everything. When it rebooted, I had nothing but a "black" screen. Had to go
thru a re-registration process with MS to verify that I was using genuine MS
Vista. Such craziness!

Today, they had me turn off the Norton Firewall and try to download updates
- still nothing.

I looked in the msconfig, System Config, Services Tab and I found numerous
(too many to list) "stopped" services. I'm wondering now if this might have
something to do with it. I am also wondering if it might be caused by the
fact that these updates have to do with security, junk e-m, etc., that they
might not be needed since I am using Norton.

I am somewhat computer literate; have a Lenovo x64 Windows Vista Premium;
using Norton Internet Security 2008, Windows Firewall is off, as is Windows
Defender since I was getting msgs that it was butting heads with Norton.

Looking forward to receiving any assistance that may be provided. Thank you.

Here I am again..

I did try the "link" that you have in your message (Download Catalog), and I
selected the download. After it said that it had completed, I went to Start,
Run, clicked on desktop and then clicked on the new folder it had created,
but there was nothing in it - No match found for your search.

Now what???????

Vista stores downloaded files in different locations than XP does.
Since the OP never stated which OS was running, the instructions were
generalized.

For Vista, check these locations:

C:\Users\<USERNAME>\downloads\

C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Desktop\

Being that Vista is not installed here but I did beta test it, hopefully
my memory of the location[s] are correct.
