Curious as to why WU site is telling me that AutoUpdate is require

I just shut off the Auto Update service, as I do not want it running in the
background, and then went to the WindowsUpdate website to see if there were
any updates available, since I had just read about some new security flaws. I
am greeted by :

"Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that
these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started."

You have got to be kidding me. Auto Update is now REQUIRED to manually
visit the WU site?

Awaiting a response...

The Ato update service is required to be able to run Winows Update v5.
You can still disable auto updates but the service must be running
foir Windows Update to function.

The only thing Windows Updates (WU) v5 demands is that the Automatic
Updates (AU) *service* is running for WU to work.

So you can turn "Automatic Updates" *off* in the AU applet found in
Control Panel (this will not turn off/disable the AU service!), and
this way nothing will be automatically installed on the computer,
but WU will still work for manual updates (without you needing to
reconfigure anything for each time you want to use the "manual" WU).

Interesting decision to make the service required

Hi

I think the reason behind this was to use the same
components/technology for all the update variants,
manual Windows Updates, Automatic Updates and SUS.

You can try a system recovery to fix this!Remember to unplug everything but
the monitor, keyboard and the mouse! It's worth a try! mandy

Hi;

Not a good idea. That will not remove the requirement for Windows XP
systems to have the Automatic Update service running when visiting the
Windows Update website.
