I am having the same problem. When installing the Security Update for
Microsoft .NET passport, v1.1, service pack 1 (KB886903), an error box named
SL52.tmp comes up:

"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=0xc98 (3224), Thread id=0xca8 (3240).

Click OK to terminate the application
Click CANCEL to debug the application"

I tried both and they get the same error in the Windows Update box:

"Updates were unable to successfully installed", then listed the name of the
update.

When I close that, the yellow shield continues to appear in the icon tray
stating that I have updates to install, which is just this one. I restarted
my computer (all the other updates did successfully install) and this is the
only one that will not.

I too have the same problem but my process ID and Tread ID are a little
different.
I have searched the MS Troubleshooting pages with no luck and they obviously
don't care to help exept for a price.

This is exactly the error I get.
The thread and processor ID may vary, but the error signature is identical.
I would uninstall the update that has been downloaded, but it is unclear how
to do so.
