Damn you, Microsoft - CAN'T INSTALL SP1

Sure enough, after waiting impatiently for months, I tried to install
SP1 today and it was a disaster.

1) It gets to 'configuring updates stage 3 of 3' and FREEZES at 0%.
2)This forces reboot, same freeze.
3) So I reboot in safe mode, and it resumes installation of stage 3
and gets to 98% - whoo - hoo!
4) And then, after two hours of this, it says 'Service Pack could not
install; reverting changes'
5) Back to square 1, an entire evening wasted.

Damn you, Microsoft. I'm running a simple laptop, nothing special. I
disabled the firewall, the antivirus, antispyware, and network before
trying to install SP1. Nothing. NADA.

How long do you idiots have to work on this thing to get it to succeed
on any simple laptop? Years? Decades? Other people are reporting
similar problems. Are you gonna respond?

Or are you gonna just *&%$ up my machine permanently when you FORCE
this stinking, bug-ridden service pack onto it in a few weeks time?
And then who do I sue?

I installed SP1 without any issues, but I still don't like Vista as a whole.
To me, it looks like it was designed like AOL software...protect me from
myself and limit what I can customize...
some seem to like it, I just can't force myself to like it.
Even the Nanny (UAC) isn't smart enough to recognize Windows update, it
still asks, are you sure, really, REALLY sure...

Well--
Did you try to get another copy of the download? And compare/verify the two
copies?
Did you have any unusual software running?
Oddball hardware attached?
What make and model is your laptop?
Maybe the problem is in and/or around the laptop, not the update?
Did you have a beta version prior to the real SP! ?
Updated a P/C (new motherboard & processor, and a Laptop with no problem,
other than the usual call to MS CS (India this time) due to the
Mbd/Processor change. The SP1 install did take a fair amount of time to
complete.

Only issue I have is with AuthenTec, not Microsoft. The bastards need
to update their drivers or allow us to download them.

I've installed Beta SP1, RTM SP1 and now the public release of SP1
without any trouble and my system is running smooth. Many people are
reporting a good experience with this update. Any trouble would be
system/driver related, not SP1 related.

And MS recommends using the Windows Update to install SP1. Not installing it
from the 400+MB on a single machine. I had zero problems with my Vista
Ultimate and two Vista Premium machines. I disabled nothing. Firewall and
virus checking was in use as normal.

Good for you, I end up in an eternal loop of BSoD-Reboot if I try to install
SP1 (I tried both the stand-alone and Windows Update versions, same results)
I'm running Business, tho.

Fun fact, it's just like http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358/en but I've
had the prerequisite update that's usually associated to that installed a
month ago...

It's all because You ignored the warning to Not Turn Off your computer! Both
of our PCs froze on "3 of 3 - 0%" for several minutes, no big deal. It takes
longer than that to brew a pot of coffee. Vista was "busy" preparing for the
final stage, but you were too impatient, you couldn't wait, you didn't give
it time. Don't blame Microsoft for blatant user error!

Now, tonight, start the SP1 update, watch an hour long TV show, go back to
the computer and restart it during the commercials, and then watch another
hour long TV show.

No, you idiot, it is NOT because I ignored any warning! The machine
FROZE, geddit? The little circle stopped TURNING, geddit? I could have
waited till the end of the world and stage 3 wouldn't have installed.

There are several 'solutions' out there, which of course means there's
NO solution at present, since if there were one it'd be the same for
everyone having exactly the same problem.

Like I said, SP1 sucks as far as my current experience goes.
Microsoft, the stinkers, need to fix it. How long do they need -
another 3 years? God, I hate this company. I so hope Linux wins out
eventually, before I'm too old to care.

Microsoft is providing Free, No Charge support for Vista Service Pack 1.
This includes OEM, pre-installed Vista systems.
This also includes Email, Chat and Phone support.
