Data Execution Prevention closes Windows Mail when compacting message store ...

And it's no help when I go online for a solution. When I reopen Windows
Mail, it tells me that there was a problem with the last message I was
reading. But this seems to happen for any message. Below is the problem
signature. What is happening?

Thanks for your suggestions. I've tried the WMUtil program. It did detect
that the database had been corrupted and allowed me to compact it. However I
am still getting the same problem. I am considering "upgrading" to Live Mail
but still want to know why the problem is happening. It's actually quite a
simple matter to stop DEP closing Windows Mail and I have found the
following in the DEP FAQ.

" What should I do if DEP is closing a program that's part of Windows, such
as svchost.exe or explorer.exe?
The svchost.exe and explorer.exe programs are parts of the Windows operating
system. If DEP closes them or other Windows services, the cause could be
smaller programs, such as extensions, that are created by other software
publishers and that operate inside Windows. If you have recently installed a
program and notice DEP closing Windows-based programs, check with the
software publisher to see if there is an updated, DEP-compatible version
available, or try uninstalling the program."

It may be significant that the problem started after I installed eight
windows updates, five important and three recommended. None were specific to
Windows Mail. So, my original question, has anyone any ideas as to what
might be happening? Why is DEP closing Windows Mail?

WMUtil does not detect a corrupt database.

Its likely that some 3rd party program is interfering and that is resulting
in the DEP errors. You can go to Start | Search and type msconfig and then
disable startup items to determine the culprit. Also see point 3 here:

I'm sure that was what the DOS window told me when I pressed "Repair
Database". Scanned, message about being corrupt and then repaired. I'll do a
screen shot if I run it again.

Thanks for the tips. I don't use on-access anti-virus but have done a few
recent scans to eliminate that possibility. At the moment I've just
increased the time between compactions to 200 runs, when that comes I can
use your utility again. If it's a third party program, perhaps the DEP error
will show up elsewhere.
