Hello.

After I deleted my 'history log,' I went into 'SoftwareDistribution,
Datastore,' I saw the 'datastore.edb' file 'and' 'datastoreold' file.

Shouldn't the 'datastoreold' file automatically delete itself after deleting
the history log or does it have to be manually deleted?

Which edition of Windows; which Service Pack level, please ?

How was the 'history log' deleted ? DataStore.edb IS the history that is
shown on the MS update sites and in InstalledUpdates on Vista/W2K8, etc.

IF the Updating Components were reset using this Fixit:

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Then DataStore.edb is renamed to .old, just in case the User wants to be
able to restore it. As to why ... don't ask the author of the tool, it
was not his decision.
I agree, DataStore.edb should be deleted instead of being renamed .old.

I am using Win XP with SP 3.

I am talking about the 'Windows Update' history log. I know that
'datastore'edb' is the history but why is the 'datastoreold' file there too?
Shouldn't that file automatically delete itself after clearing the history?

I ran %windir% and went into 'SoftwareDistribution, Datastore, Datastore.edb'
and renamed the file 'datastoreold.'

That's what MS calls 'expected behavior'. The WindowsReset.msi, which
resets the updating components, behaves in the same manner, eg. it
leaves datastore.old on the system and when the system seeks updates or
updates, DataStore.edb is created.

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Apparently MS has decided that since Hard Drives have huge capacity
these days that it's not an issue to leave DataStore.old behind,
although it can grow to 50 MB are larger.
It can be safely deleted if you choose to do so.
