Date advancing

Everytime I reboot my machine a new date and time appear. My computer is set
to adjust the time based on the internet but today is now June 2, 2008 and
the computer says the time is 4:44 am. My clock shows 8:35. This is
extremely frustrating as the clock can only be changed the administrator (my
husband by password only). The date hops all over everytime we reboot or log
off and then log on again. Help! Is it Vista, Linux or my CPU that's
screwed up???

It's a small battery on the motherboard that remembers to BIOS setting like
the time. It is replaceable from some store like Frys, or Radio Shack. About
like a quarter, it has a clip that lets you slide it off the motherboard
after you open the case, a lot like replacing a watch battery.

How old is the computer? I am going to guess the battery that powers
the internal clock is dead or almost dead.

The computers time and date should be correctly set
by opening the motherboard's BIOS.

My machine is 4 months old. I'll talk to my husband and hopefully this will
solve it. You are one of 3 saying the same thing. thanks....
