Deactivation of windows help and support

I'm trying to use CorelDRAW Version 7 and am plagued with the 'Windows help
and support' with the message:-

"Why can't I get Help from this program?

The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which was used
in previous versions of Windows and it is not supported in Windows Vista."

It is displayed immediately after any activity. I just cannot get rid of the
message.

Windows Help doesn't exist in Vista. They changed things.

"Ever since Windows 3.1, Microsoft included the Windows Help program
(WinHlp32.exe) with new releases. WinHlp32.exe is used to view 32-bit Help
files that have the .hlp file name extension. Starting with the release of
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has decided to no longer
include in WinHlp32.exe as a component of the Windows operating system.
Microsoft made this decision because WinHlp32.exe has not had a major update
for many years, and it does not meet Microsoft's standards for all new
Microsoft programs. Microsoft realizes that this may cause some difficulties
for customers who want to upgrade to Windows Vista or to Windows Server 2008
but still rely on 32-bit .hlp files. Therefore, Microsoft is making
WinHlp32.exe available as a download from the Microsoft Download Center."

What you're experiencing is another Microsoft bone-headed decision
which was made to force developers to use a different help system.

What's obviously wrong with this idea is as you've seen you can't
access the help system of some older applications. I experienced this
too and it ****ed-me off big time.

CorelDRAW Version 7 is not Vista-compatible, so you use it at your own risk.

Well, there you go. It might be worth trying to install the old pre-Vista
help system - you can download it from Microsoft's site, although I can't be
sure this will cure your problem.

You should have found out which of your programs was compatible with Vista
before upgrading to it.

That's always such a lame, even moronic answer. It assume users of
Windows for years will dump all their software that worked in XP or
Win2000 and run out and buy new Vista compatible software.

There are NO issues running the older help system along side the newer
flavor. Just like there was no real reason for Microsoft by design
disabling it by default thereby breaking many application. Typical
Microsoft arrogance.

They actually did that to stop developers from continuing to use the old
system.

Well, I downloaded WinHlp32.exe and suddenly all my old-app help files
came back to life.
No big deal.

Hello Ringmaster

Apologies taking so long to get back to you. Just wanted to thank you for
the solution to my CorelDraw problem. Tried contacting you via your email
address but it bounced. I couldn't get back to you before as there is a known
problem in the login procedure (thinks I'm logged out after I've logged in).
They are working on it. I got a getaround from MS this morning, hence this
post. Anyway, that aside, the fix went fine. Just for info, there was a
small blip with a message coming up “Windows Help – There was a problem
running the macro (1037)� - no manifestation of a limitation however. Now
thankfully I can use CorelDraw.

ps I agree, re Steve Thackery's response. ‘Think before you ink’ is an
idiom he should familiarise himself with. I recently bought a new desktop and
notebook and they both had Vista bundled whether I liked it or not. So
‘upgrade’ was not the name of the game.

Anyway, even if I were upgrading, it would cost an arm and a leg to
research before buying – cost/goodwill access to a Vista machine to run all
the applications (dozens!) - searching news groups, trying to ask Microsoft,
etc. etc.

I’m sure I’m not alone in that respect. My old pc fell over so I had plenty
of old applications that were still good enough.
