December update problem - Win 2000 Professional

Once my update installation completed I cannot access the internet. I spent
an hour on the phone with my ISP's tech support thinking there was something
wrong there. Since that is not the case I assume something is wrong with the
update and believe this more so since so many others have reported issues on
this site. I was unable to find any fixes or support on the Microsoft site
for Win 2000. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have homework due tonight.
UGH! Thanks in advance!!

I'm hoping you're defining "cannot access the Internet" more than just using
your browser or email.

* check your IP address [maybe renew it]
* light on NIC on? on router?
* ping a known good site
* tracert

PS - A reminder that the remaining support [i.e. security updates] for Win
2K fie out in April or May next year. May want to nudge Santa to get you a
new system. :-)

My IP address will come up; I cannot ping using web or IP address. There is
no router. ) Yes, this is an old system and a replacement is in the works.
If I can limp along with this one for a bit longer that would be ideal.
Thanks!

Can you ping your gateway?
Reset your modem?
Seems like you are on the 'net as you have an IP address unless it's
supplied by your modem [i.e. 192.168.x.x].
May want to check with your ISP again. i had a case where it was the
modem/router. From the ISP to the router it was fine. From the PC to the
router was dreadfully slow, even after a cable change and different PC. Seems
the problem was with the router but on the PC side. Changed. PC now in the
fast lane.

First, I'm no expert but I had a similar problem (see 'updates for 9/10
Dec - Vista' in this forum).

Try a roll back to a registry restore from before this problem; that's what
I did. I then installed the updates several at a time and for some strange
reason, that seemed to do the trick.

I knew the problem was caused by the updates since the problem occurred only
after I installed those 13 updates (from Dec 9 or 10) and my wife's laptop,
which was not updated, worked just fine on the same exact router.

That's about the only advice I can give. I hope it works out well for you.

Thanks Dave! I will try the registry restore from my backup program! Looking
forward to having the newer Operating Systems that have that feature built
in...

Yes, same here. It happened immediately after the update. This happened on a
laptop (Win2K) using a WiFi connection.
When the update restarted, I couldn't reconnect. In fact, it wasn't just the
internet, I couldn't connect to my LAN/WiFi. It was as if I couldn't
authenticate to the router.
While I connected to it, it gave a default IP adddr as if I gave it a bad
password.

No matter what I attempted to do, I could not access my LAN & Internet.

And, please, don't tell me to update the O/S. That does not solve the issue
with what the December Update did to a working system.

Another Win2k PC, without the Update, works fine and connects.
