Per automatic update I got the IE8 downloaded on both my home computers (both
have XP SP3). After installing it on my secondary computer and having issues
I could not get straightened out I decided not to install it on my main unit.
Tonight I got the "downloading updates" icon and noticed it was taking a long
time to download so I checked to see what was being downloaded, and it was
IE8. IE8 as I mentioned was already downloaded but not installed; is there a
time limit on a downloaded but not installed update? I haven't deleted
anything but browser history stuff since the download, and until yesterday
the icon telling me I had updates ready for install would appear each time I
logged on; won't Windows allow me to make any decisions for myself? It looks
as though unless I want to sit through the several hours (again) it takes to
download IE8 on dialup, I'll have to disable auto update which I am not fond
of doing either.

Anybody know whats up with this?

Dell Vostro 200
Windows XP Home Edition w/SP3
2048 Mb Ram
150Gb Hard Drive, 136 Gb free
Norton Internet Security 2008

As long as the download resides in the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
folder and hasn't been cleared manually or by using some of these more or less
hyperfluend "cleaning" programs, there's no deadline. But if a new version or
package an update is beeing released via Windows Update, the update reoccurs
and may need to be downloaded and installed again.

On August 24th, IE8 (aka KB944036) has been released in an updated package,
reflecting some setup "experience" changes, in case IE8 hasn't been installed
already. See also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199/en-us for your
reference.

This "may" be the source of the "trouble" you've had with/after installing
IE8 previously.

When does your NIS 2008 subscription expire? (Only NIS 2009 v3.0 is
supported in IE8.)

===========

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Run Windows Update manually | Uncheck/deselect IE8 and hide it ("Don't
show me this update again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

=====================================

How to hide updates in Vista: Click View available updates | Right-click on
the update you wish to hide | Click Hide Update | Confirm the UAC (User
Account Control) if appropriate.

To restore/unhide updates in Vista: Start | Control Panel | System And
Maintenance (If you are using Classic View, skip this step) | Windows Update
| Restore Hidden Updates | Find and select the update you wish to install |
Restore. You can now reselect it and install through the normal process.

Thanks for that info Freudi. Norton was one of my problems, and truth be told
not a very big one at that. With IE8 the norton icon in the launch tray shows
that my phishing protection has been turned off everytime I log on to IE8
while in the norton toolbar it shows everything is o.k. Takes about a second
and a half to fix. More annoying than the norton thingy though is that I like
to occasionally delete portions of my browsing history in "real time" i.e.
while still browsing and I find IE8 a bit more cumbersome. With the info
you've provided I shall give IE8 a second chance and see if the improved
version is more to my liking. Thanks again.
