Default Browser for MSN Messenger Links

Hello.

I have a problem with the way MSN Messenger opens links in my browser. I
quote here a post in this newsgroup back from June 2005:
***
My prefered internet browser is not Internet Explorer. I have selected my
prefered browser to be the default on my computer, but MSN Messenger still
opens IE when I click on the inbox button. I would like to know how to change
this. (posted by themckayguy)
***

I have the exact same question and would like to know how to make this
possible (Now in 2009).
In the reply to the above quoted post, Jonathan Kay [MVP] says:
***
This is by design. Although Messenger will open your default browser for
links, Hotmail and Spaces will open in Internet Explorer due to the security
features for Passport.
***

In my case, ALL LINKS from MSN Messenger (Live Messenger as it is now) open
in IE ONLY

In a reply to a similar post in 2006, Jonathan Kay [MVP] says:
***
Messenger can't use FireFox to display your Hotmail. It needs to securely
pass your credentials from Messenger to the browser which it can only do with
Internet Explorer.
***

Huh!! Then why is it that other IM apps can? Say in Yahoo Messenger, i can
open my Y! Mail correctly in FireFox directly by clicking on Inbox in the Y!
Messenger app.
Why is it that MSN Messenger can't?

And above all, why has MS kept this "by-design" functioning?

*I* have chosen my default browser to be FireFox.
On *MY* computer, *I* am the one who decides WHICH browser I want to use.

Why doesn't Messenger respect MY choice.

Thanks and sorry for the rant, but it is really a pain to be forced to use
MS websites in IE (by default). I don't want to use IE.

Greetings Arvin,

In Windows Live Messenger 2009 this was changed. All links, including Hotmail, now open in
your default browser. However, the login will not be automatic as Microsoft has no secure
way of logging you into a third party browser.

You may now search for all the posts from other people now begging for it to be changed back
to IE (and there's quite a lot of those actually).

Why isn't there an option to allow the user to select which browser they
would like their email to open in, regardless of default browser??

Wouldn't this solve all problems and make IE users and Firefox users happy?

Shawn.
