Default screen resolution for installer

I would love if the default screen resolution was higher than 640X480 and
800X600... my monitor doesn't support either of those resolutions and trying
to install windows vista when you can't see what's going on isn't an easy
task.

I think it should just default to 1024X768 at least... I don't see why this
can't be done seeing as how once the installation is complete it defaults to
a much higher res anyways.. Once it was installed my new default resoulution
was set to 1600X 1200...

I don't think there would be any problems with having the installer default
to somehting like 1024X768 seeing as how a computer needs to be recent to
even run vista... I doubt you'll run into many people that have montiors that
can't support 1024X768

Hi, What kind of monitor do you have? I've not seen one that would not
support those resolutions. Just curious.

I'm using a Viewsonic P220f... a fairly large sized monitor that doesn't
support anything less than 1024X768. When it tries to display them the screen
gets all squished and overlapping.... playing with the controlls for size and
position don't really do anything either.

the reason the installer will not use a higher resolution its because
installers for the most part have to start the computer in "VGA" (kinda like
safe mode) and even though Vista requires alot of hardware to run, there is
no way an OS can use the hardware if the OS is not installed. the default for
installers at least Linux and MS is always a low resolution VGA type. i am
very surprised your monitor cant run at low resolution as it will make it
useless if you ever have to boot into safe mode. i am more inclined to think
the problem is with the video card. if you dont have a PCI video card try
uninstalling the Video driver before installing Vista.

i want to say that when Vista is installing, the BIOS is controling the
monitor in real mode. but im not sure if that is correct.

If when you turn your PC on your Boot screen displays properly, then the
monitor can handle 640x480. A scan of viewsonics spec sheet for this
monitor only lists a maximum res, with no exclusions.
so this too would confirm that your monitor supports it.

I agree with him, it sounds like video card driver issues.

I checked into it... It actually supports 800X600.... but it doesn't support
640X480, the main post screen doesn't show normal either it's all squished
