I belive that during the night there was an automatic windows update,
one that automatically rebooted (as a few updates do), when it entered
XP again, the background was gone.
Just white background with text in the upper half about restoring
active desktop I think it's called.
So of course I click it, then an error message popup (stupid me didn't get
a screenshot and I dont wanna reboot as I'm typing this message....
It says there's a script problem with C:\Documents and Settings\<my
username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt
Maybe the computer just crashed during the night and the file corrupt,
so I installed a backup of just that file - din't help a bit....
What gives? Am I alone with this? (if I am it's a local problem

It appears one is able to review installed updates, and this was installed:

Update for Windows XP (KB951978)
Install this update to resolve an issue in VBScript/JScript scripts from
CScript\WScript hosts, certain built-ins may not function correctly when
Standards and Formats in Regional Settings is changed. After you install
this item, you may have to restart your computer.

So will it be a problem in the future or what?
The error message on my screen disappears when I select a background,
so it's not a problem that I know of yet...
Just wonder what info is stored in Desktop.htt

I had exactly the same problem with an update that was automaticly installed
yesterday (July 9 2008) Don't know the update file identity, sorry. It happened
on two different laptop PC's. Same symptoms as yours on both.I uninstalled
the update on one, and it cured the problem completely. On the other, I can't
find the update to uninstall it.Spent hours rebooting and cursing. Did nobody
test this update before posting it for us? Seems not... Still can't get
second PC back to normal System restore won't even work now. You are
definately not alone in this.
I hope someone who reads this has a solution.

Do you expect any more problems than that message?
For it it disappears when I add a background, even if I remove it
again afterwards...

I still get an error box every time I re-boot. It says that Windows explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close. The problem with "Active
Desktop Recovery" and blank screen doesn't happen every time. There was also
a problem with the taskbar at the bottom refusing to show itself when I moved
the cursor down to it.Re-booting several times fixed that ( I think ).
Everything seems to work after clicking OK on the windows explorer error box
(until I boot up again) then I have to go through this all over again. Can't
find any updates for last couple days, so can't remove them. Hope MS reads
and responds Running XP by the way

I had exactly the same thing happen last night (7/9). I wondered if the
installation earlier in the day of KB951748 (Security update) combined with
my use of Zone Alarm prevented the update from finishing. I lost
connectivity with the internet and email and suspect that had something to do
with the update not finishing. I got the internet back after I turned off
Zone Alarm. I also don't know what was being installed (SP3 perhaps?).
About midnight I tried to install SP3 in the hopes that I could get Zone
Alarm up and running again and the download worked fine but the install
aborted. I decided to turn off the automatic updater this morning and read
posts here before I tried anything else. I'm guessing your computer didn't
crash during the night and that there are a lot of other people scratching
their heads this morning.

Zone Alarm has issued updates to fix their problem.
