defender update gets error 0x8024400e

I just installed Defender on a new PC and it cannot successfully get updates.
I've tried the stuff in the troubleshooting tips: restarting, deleting
windowsupdate.log, manually downloading updates, etc. The error from the log
is:
WARNING: SyncUpdates failure, error = 0x8024400E, soap client error = 7,
soap error code = 400, HTTP status code = 200
WARNING: SOAP Fault: 0x000190
WARNING: faultstring:Fault occurred
WARNING: ErrorCode:InternalServerError(5)
WARNING: Messagenull)
<some more warnings>
WARNING: PTError: 0x8024400e
WARNING: SyncUpdates_WithRecovery failed.: 0x8024400e
<some more warnings>
FATAL: Unable to complete asynchronous search. (hr=8024400E)

Any ideas of how to make it work? I have four more to build just like this
one.

Go here: ResetWindowsUpdate.msi

Click on the page with the top right corner folded over at the top to
download ResetWindowsUpdate.msi and *save* it or, click this link to
obtain it:

Clean boot one of the systems:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

*** REMEMBER *** to enable the native XP firewall IF a 3rd party
firewall had been used instead. The system must be connected to the net
when the tool is run as it will download the latest edition of the
Windows Update Agent.

Now run ResetWindowsUpdate.msi and reboot afterwards.

Did doing the above get the defs for WD ?

If no, then you can post to one of the WD newsgroups as it's not related
to an updating issue:

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Can you update Defender manually via the right-hand pane at
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/?

Can you access http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, select CUSTOM & scan,
then install any offered updates?
