All attemps to install the latest version of definitions fail for definition
update 1.37.1.0 both from Windows Update and the direct download from the
portal site. Error details:

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.37.1.0)

Installation date: ‎6/‎25/‎2008 7:42 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 800706BE
<error details truncated>

It also gives me a BSoD upon shutdown since the failed installation refuses
to die and forces shutdown and after hanging at shutdown get BSoD. Will have
to write the 0x0** codes next time if it happens again (I have to restart
again after another failed installation). Thanks again Micro$oft.

Are you currently running Vista or Vista SP1? <=just a question!

===========================
Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. See
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx

TIP: Access these newsgroups using your default newsreader, not your
browser. See instructions on above page.

Did you install Vista SP1 via Windows Update or manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you
installed Vista SP1?

As of this post, both Windows Update and the Security Portal are currently
offering definitions v1.37.1.0.

No Ult came with SP1 and the Def update internal failed miserably but the
second try using the direct download worked but it still gave me one more
BSoD, but it wasnt that bad. The main thing is that although both places are
offering the same version, the implementation or installation thru the
internal updater in defender must behave differently in some
not-so-publicized way. why not just make things that work BEFORE you release
to media? thanks yet again, Micro$oft!!! This thread may now be
locked/closed. Thank you those of you who replied including myself. lol.
