definition updates for Windows Defender

I'm using WinXP Pro SP2.

Are we supposed to rely on Microsoft Update for definition updates for
Windows Defender?

The reason I'm asking is that when I use MS Update to check for current
updates for my computer, it listed "Definition Update for Windows Defender -
KB915597 (Definition 1.24.5193.0)."

The MS Malware Protection Center
(http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx), however, listed
1.24.5364.0 as the latest definition version.

Why is the MS Update page listing an older definition version?

I *think* the defs on the MPC are updated daily. If not daily, pretty
near that time period.
The updates downloaded by WD usually come down on Tuesday/Wednesday and
Friday, IIRC.
I downloaded the defs from the MPC yesterday and they were at
1.24.5335.0. So maybe my theory is correct. <w>

Windows version?

Yes, Automatic Updates will update Defender, usually twice a week. The
definitions for manual installation at the Security Portal are usually
updated daily.

If you allow Automatic Updates to update Defender, what Definitions version
is Defender displaying for you at the moment? That's really all you need to
worry about.

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. This is not one of them.

I did think of posting my question in a Windows Defender newsgroup but there
isn't one listed. There's just microsoft.public.security. The topics
posted in this newsgroup is about the operation/function of security. My
question was not about a function of Windows Defender.

My question was about MS Update, which fits this newsgroup (windowsupdate),
and why it's listing an old update.

Before I manually downloaded the update from the Malware webpage, Defender
displayed the Jan. 2 version (I don't remember the version number but I do
remember the version date).

Full quoting helps those offering /volunteer/ support work more efficiently
to assist scores of users in all newsgroups. Look around: You'll see that
full quoting is the convention here. ("When in Rome...")

Moving on...

Enable Automatic Updates (AU) | Wait till at least Sunday, 13 January for AU
to update Defender | Reply to this post on or after the 13th and tell me
what Definitions version is displayed in Defender's opening window. For
your reference, v1.24.5379.0 is available at the Security Portal as I post
this reply...but please do NOT update Defender manually again until you've
posted your reply on or after the 13th.
